Reactions have trailed the emergence of a video of pupils of Sunshine Primary School Ile-Ife who were seen protesting the ongoing ASUU Strike in front of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun state.
It was an unpleasing sight as pupils who are believed to be primary school students took to the street to express their displeasure over the ongoing ASUU strike. Although supervised by adults believed to be members of the teaching staff of the school, the pupils were seen chanting and displaying placards with several inscriptions calling on the government to find a speedy and permanent solution to the ongoing ASUU strike which had lasted well over 5 months and has kept both lecturers and students out of the classroom.
The video which was posted on the Nigerian Tribune’s Twitter handle has since generated reactions from several Twitter users. Success (@successin2023) commented, “It is only God that will help us fight the enemies against good governance in Nigeria, it shall never be well with them”. Also, Latona Kayode (@lattykaybaba) said “It’s good they know their civic right and start utilizing it at a young age to secure their future from awon agba jatijati.” Uche Bakaadi (@Uchebakaadi) also commented “Child Act forbids putting children in danger, d police could react to this protest with Army arriving in armoured tanks. Let’s b guarded on an attempt to regime change by Yoruba people” However, Alagba Afolayanka (AfolayanAdebiyi) shared a different opinion, He said “This is most irresponsible of the proprietor of this school. Do the students understand the issues at hand? What do they stand to gain or lose if the strike is stopped or continued? Child abuse should not be encouraged. Parents should care about what activities the schools are”
ASUU has been on strike since 14th February 2022. Although, with a lot of efforts to find a solution to the grievance of the striking lecturers, all have proven to be abortive even after several committees and meetings have been held between the lecturers and the Federal government.
