The end of the road came much earlier than many would have expected to UI Pioneers at the ongoing HiFL league as their dreams of becoming the Higher Institution champions were dashed just even before taking off.
A surprise 2-0 loss met the UI boys when they faced off against Lead City University. It was an Ibadan derby in Lagos as both schools are residents of the ancient town. The last meeting between both teams was in the preliminary qualifiers of the 2022 NUGA games that took place at the University of Ibadan with the Pioneers coming out victors and denying the boys from Leadcity a place in the NUGA Games.
It was an opportunity for revenge for Leadcity which they grabbed with both hands. The loss meant that UI was able to amass a total of 10 points from the available 18 with wins over LAUTECH, ELIZADE University (Walk-over) and OOU after sharing the spoils with LASU on match day one. The inability to secure qualifications was a function of goal difference.
