The Joint Action Committee of NASU and SAANU had extended the ongoing strike of their respective unions by additional 8 weeks. This was communicated in a communiqué released to the general public and signed by the General Secretary and Nation president of SSANU. The communique is coming after an initial 1-month extension on 23rd May 2022.
Amongst several reasons for the extension to the ongoing strike, the communiqué stated that “the negotiations with the government team are still ongoing, even though at an exceedingly slow pace.”
Meanwhile, Federal Government has promised to return the students of tertiary institutions who have been out of class for almost 6 months back to class very soon.
Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige, responding to questions from State House Correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, assured that efforts were on to resolve the ongoing faceoff between it and ASUU and another University-based union over payment platforms soon. He said negotiations are still ongoing amongst the concerned parties and assured that a common end will be reached soon.
