Stop Spreading Fake News, Soldiers Didn’t Harass Protesters at UI Gate – Mascot
Students from across the nation continue to express their grievances towards ASUU and FG about the continuous locking out of students from school due to the ongoing ASUU strike.
On Friday 13th May 2022, students converged at the main gate of The University of Ibadan blocking the Sango-Ojoor highway and chanting songs of solidarity and calling on the Federal Government and ASUU to come to a truce.
After some hours of the protest, drama ensued as an altercation occurred between men of the Nigerian Army and the protesting student. However, there have been different narratives about the actual happening of the event even with major newspaper platforms alleging assault. Click here for more details
However, in a bid to correct the narrative, the President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, Comm. Adewale Adeyinka, fondly referred to as Mascot gave a public declaration to clarify what happened in the midst of the chaos.
He tweeted” I don’t know why we’re quick in spreading fake news. The Nigeria army didn’t harras the protesters, one rank officer was passing guess on a special duty and those guys blocker their vehicle that they won’t pass they’re Infront of the vehicle with evidence (1/2) The officers in charge came down from the vehicle to talk to his boys and those protesters cursing them. Why?
Are we fighting Security personnel or FG who decided not to open our school?
Let us be guided. Media representation and peaceful demonstration (2/2)
The University of Ibadan Students’ Union is scheduled to hold her protest on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at the University Main gate as a sign of solidarity with other sister unions and to lend a voice to the incessant ASUU strike that has disrupted the learning process of Nigerian students.
