Team UI Arrives in UNILAG For NUGA’22 In Grand Style, Aims to Come Back with 1st Position.
The contingents of the sports team of the University of Ibadan has arrived at the University of Lagos, Akoka for the 26th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association, NUGA’22.
The team departed the university campus in the early hours of today for the host university to participate in the inter-university sports competition which will hold from March 16-27, 2022.




NUGA was formed in 1965, however, the first edition of NUGA games was held in the University of Ibadan in 1966 with member universities participating in an array of sports. NUGA games have served as the zenith of amateur sports in Nigeria producing notable athletes like Felix Owolabi, a member of the 1980 squad that won the Africa Nations Cup, Seyi Olafinjana, a former key member of the Super Eagles, Hamid Adio of NTA who captained Nigeria to many international competitions as a track and field athlete, Olusoji Fasugba and Bisi Afolabi, as well as Olumide Oyedeji, captain of the Nigeria Basketball team, D’Tigers, who is also a star in the NBA amongst many other sportsmen and women
UNILAG will play host to this year’s competition after the last edition of the competition last held in 2017 at University of Agriculture, Markurdi. The competition will be held across several prominent sports facilities in the university and around Lagos state which includes, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Yaba College of technology, UNILAG sports centre, National Stadium Surulere, e.t.c.



In this year’s competition, the university level sports competition will feature 16 sporting events and over 5000 athletes from over 70 higher institutions in Nigeria.
The University of Ibadan contingent will be looking at having a better outing in this year’s edition of the competition as they are out to improve on their achievement in the past year. In 2001, the University of Ibadan came to the fourth position in the 18th edition of the competition that was hosted in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The University of Ibadan hosted the Zone B preliminaries of the Pre-NUGA games earlier this year and will be looking at replicating the excellent and blistering form she displayed during the qualifying series.
Sports to look out for at this year’s competition includes Football, Basketball, Table-tennis, Tennis and Swimming amongst many other sports. In this year’s competition, Boxing will also be featuring for the first time in the history of the competition.
