It was an atmosphere of joy and frenzy for the newly admitted students of the University of Ibadan on Tuesday, February 15, 2021. The new students gathered in their multitude as the International Conference Centre played host to the Administrative officers of the University and the Student Union executive amidst several other top dignitaries in the university and the newly admitted students as they were matriculated into the university and are now qualified UItes.
The ceremony started at about 10 am with the academic procession and lasted for about 70 mins. As expected, the newly admitted students had already converged at ICC as early enough as directed, as they anticipated the arrival of the Vice-Chancellor.
Upon his arrival, the marquee event commenced with the national anthem before the welcome address was delivered. While the Vice-Chancellor gave his remarks, he highlighted the process that qualified the new students for eligibility of admission and subsequently their matriculation. He stated that 63,000 candidates chose the University of Ibadan in JAMB but only 13,000 out of that mammoth number made the cut-off mark of 200 and above. And out of that 13, 000 only about 4200+ eventually got admission on merit after sitting for post UTME. He further stressed that anything of UI is of quality and encouraged students to keep up with their excellent stride that guaranteed their admission.
The matriculation speech was delivered by Ifeoluwa Olatayo, Founder of Soupah Kitchen and a U.I alumna of the graduating class of 2012. In her speech, she encouraged the newly admitted students to diligently chart their path while on campus, strive for academic excellence and maintain the quality that the University of Ibadan is known for across the globe.
The event was surely a memorable one as will last long in the minds of the freshers as many of them seized the opportunity to preserve the moment with friends and coursemates amongst several other individuals. Although the presence of parents was quite limited as they were advised to partake of the process virtually to limit as part of preventive measures against the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
We all at Campus News seize this opportunity to wish all newly admitted Freshers a warm welcome to the university and a prosperous stay on campus. Welcome to the First and Best, Welcome to the University of Ibadan.
