Day 2 of the Zone B preliminaries of NUGA games continued today in the University of Ibadan with several sports across different centres.
At 9 am, the badminton contest started at the Sultan Bello dome with UI showing why she’s called first and best across the board and not academics alone. Team UI qualified for Men’s Badminton Single, Men’s Badminton doubles but narrowly missed out on qualification for the mixed doubles.
From Bello Dome straight to basketball court at Awo as the male UI Basketball team faced off against the team from LAUTECH, it’s ended 20-22 in favour of Team UI. In volleyball, U.I also won 2-0.
In the handball contest, it was a total show of dominance as Team UI emerged winners 16-12 against LAUTECH.
The main highlight of the day was the male football match between Team UI and Team FTU. The games kicked off at 11 am at the New Awo stadium. First Technical University had emerged the weeping boys of the contest after their first match after receiving 7:1 trumping over from LAUTECH in their first match and also UI emerging 2:0 victors over Lead City University. The match started squarely and was quite intense but the first go from UI changed the narrative and soon paved way for the second goal as UI emerged 2:0 winners after 90mins. Subsequently team FTU also lost their basketball match today against Leadcity University
At 4 pm it was time again for convergence at Awo Stadium as the UI Female football team faced off against the ladies from Ogbomosho. It ended 2-0 in favour of team UI and it sealed their qualification to NUGA’22 which is to be held in UNILAG later in the match.
After Day 2 of the Zone B preliminaries for NUGA’22, University of Ibadan stands head and shoulders above other. The handball, Men’s badminton singles, Men’s badminton doubles, Volleyball,Judo, Swimming, Tennis and Chess contingents have all qualified for the NUGA games.
University of Ibadan dominance has been without question in these preliminaries and it can get better with Day-3 action set to feature football and athletics.
