UISU SPECIAL RELEASE 105 06/11/2021
On Restriction of Convocation Ceremony to First Class Students and Students with Prizes
The Union will like to inform our affected graduands that we share in their convictions, and as such, believe that students should not be limited in such an important occasion based on grades.
While we understand the position of the organizers of the program in whose sentiments we also share, the Union believes that there are other means to enforce Covid-19 protocols without necessarily denying people of a lifetime experience.
The Union has suggested in a writing, through the office of the Dean of Students to the Vice-Chancellor, certain measures that could be put in place:
1. That graduands should have been asked to get vaccinated.
2. That the convocation is done in more batches to avoid violation of Covid 19 rules.
3. Other measures and arrangements should be put in place.
Also, the Union has addressed the claims of some of the graduands of the compulsion to pay for “graduation gowns” by those that are not expected to participate at the convocation ceremony, in another letter through the Dean of Students. It is not appropriate to charge for services or items that are not rendered.
The Union awaits a swift and favourable response.
