After a few showers of rain on 30 September 2021 around the hours of 3:20 pm to 5pm , the university was there was a record of falling of mighty trees within the university campus. Although no injury or casualty was recorded, it calls for concerns. The Barth road was the most hit of this falling of trees. Just behind the Great independence hall hostel there was a report of a fallen tree across after the road which hindered movement across that axis. Also, just after the tech junction, it was a a case of multiple tree falling and even total uprooting of some might and we’ll matured plant caused by the effect of the rain. Cases of fallen trees was recorded just before Awo Junction and a few metres just after Awo junction. Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall also wasn’t left out of the effect of the rain and there are reports of a fallen tree across the road just infront of Zik Hall Block A.
Although several factors have been suspected to be sponsors of this occurrence with the chief of it being the wind effect of the rain, also the topography of this location is suspected to be a factor as these affected areas are on elevated planes. Also, the nature of the trees fell is suspected to be a factor as these trees have been found out to all be of the fibrous root system, although well matured but yet shallow and possess buttress root.
It is worthy of note that the university management has been undertaking the task of cutting down old trees around the university environment, however more of such is expected to forestall the occurrence of multiple falling or breaking of this tree subsequently should another mighty wind run through the university campus.
However, as much as it’s important to cut down these trees to forestall accidents, it’s important to note the importance and benefits of this trees in the environment and to the atmosphere. It’s serves as source of shades for people , source of food and also habitat for animals. Also, some of the species of this trees are uses for research purposes and experimentation. Cutting down all of these trees will mean direct exposure of the university campus to light radiation from the sun and even heating up of the environment. But most importantly, safety is important.
