The 2021 edition of Jaw War is right upon us and it’s no longer news that the opening ceremony of the public speaking competition will hold today, 29 September 2021 at the NFLT, Faculty of Science. However, as the U.I community anticipates what the oratory competition has to offer this year, Campus News has outlined 7 speakers that you should be looking out for. This speaker are expected to deliver the best moments from this year’s event.
1 Ayeni Otito-Jesu:
He is the president of The Literary and Debating Society, University of Ibadan. Arguably the best public speaker to have graced the Jaw War stage and even the best to have emerged out of U.I in the past decade. Otito-Jesu won the Most Outstanding Speaker Award, Jaw War 2018; Winner and Best speaker at the Finals, Jaw War 2018 1st runner up, inter-faculty oratory competition by the Students’ Council on Legal Aids, University of Ibadan – 2018; 1st Runner up, witty and Skillful – 2018; Winner, rookie of the year award, Jaw war 2017; 1st runner up, Intra-faculty Debate competition, Faculty of Education – 2017. It is expected that Otito represents Kenneth Mellanby hall at this year’s Jaw War.
2. Ayo Salako Faithful:
Faithful is a Law student, yes you just saw that. Faithful is a 400-level Law Student and a member of both Kuti Hall and Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society and also doubles as the President of Kuti Hall Literary and Debating Society. He is also the speech coach of Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society. He was the winner of 2018 Ransome Kuti Hall Great man of the podium. He was also the joint winner of 2018 Junior Chamber International Debate Competition. He was the Overall Best Speaker at Jaw War 2019. Guys, watch out for Faithful, he’s always faithful with his delivery.
3. Lawal Mubarak:
Lawal Mubarak is the President of Faculty of Technology Literary and Debating Society, so yea “techites” too debate, maybe technically though.(lol).
He has also the Vice-President of Lord Tedder Hall Literary and Debating Society. He is a 400 level student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Mubarak was the Best Speaker at Jaw War finals 2019, was the Best Speaker at Faculty of Technology Bilateral Debate and was the winner of Jaw War Rookie Oratory Competition 2018. Mubarak is populary known for the use of logic in his speeches and a very good delivery acumen with his Speeches. He is a Software Developer so expect some softwork delivery.
4. Victor Fabaredo:
Victor is the President of University of Ibadan’s British Parliamentary Debate Club. He is a 300level Law Student and a member of both Sultan Bello Hall Literary and Debating Society and Law Literary and Debating Society. He was the overall winner of 2021 Moyosore Onigbanjo Essay Competition/presentation on Data Privacy. He was also the winner of MIPLG African Intellectual Property Debate 2020. Also, he was the first runner-up at Lagos State University National Inter varsity debate and first runner up at 2019 National Law Students’ debate. Victor is noted for his potency in speaking and incredible logic and also speech writing.
Victor Fabarebo is the Captain of Bullet Squad in Bello Literary and Debating Society and the Assistant Speech Coach in Law Literary and Debating Society. Watch out for Victor, yea Victor.
5. Chiziterem Ogbonna:
Also called Chizzy, yea chizzy. He is a 400 level Law Student and a member of both Nnamdi Azikwe Hall and Faculty of Law Literary and Debating Society. He was the first runner up of Prima Strata National Law Students’ Debate and won the 2018 JCI Lanre Bello inter-faculty debate. He is also a winner of the Professor Jester Debate.
Chizzy is currently the Vice-President of Law Literary and Debating Society and the President of Nnamdi Azikwe Literary and Debating Society. He is also a creative writer, so expect some creativity in his delivery.
6. Omotayo Adenugba :
Omotayo is a 400-level student of Anthropology. He is a member of the Great Independence Hall Literary and Debating Society. He is also a student researcher and Certified media personnel. Omotayo is currently the Vice-President of the Literary and Debating Society, University of Ibadan. He was the second-runner up at Witty and Skillful 2018, a competition organized by Baptist Student’s Fellowship to improve oratory amongts Christian students. Also, he is Superbowl 2019 Finalist, and the winner of Barrister Adebowale’s Debating day. Omotayo is noted for the creativity he employs in his speeches. Watch out.
7. Aweda Bolaji :
Popular amongst student as “Oloye”, Aweda Bolaji is a 300-level student of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He is a member of both Lord Tedder Hall and Faculty of Verterinary Medicine LND where he serves as Public Relations Officer in both LNDs and even the Public Relations Officer of Lord Tedder Hall. Aweda is an expert in public relations and is currently running for the post of University of Ibadan’s Student Union Public Relations Officer. He was the runner up at Kenneth Mellanby Hall King of the Podium Inter-hall Oratory Competition (2020), and was also the runner up at Independence Hall inter-hall Oratory Competition (2020). Aweda is noted for the use of punchlines, he is second to none and that’s what we love to see at Jaw War, we can’t wait for Aweda to serve it to us hot.
Jaw War’21 promises to be full of energy and intellect which is what the event is known for. The competition started in 2014, this year’s edition will be 7th and it is themed: Africa in the Era of the New Normal. Don’t miss the opening ceremony at 3PM. Jaw War, Speak Up, Stand Up, Shut Up!!!
