In an attempt to regulate the practice of Aro in Zik Hall, and in extension, other halls of residence probably, an act that raises a debate on its validity as regards fun or harassment, the Executive Council of Nnamidi Azikiwe Hall, University of Ibadan has released a policy statement.
This policy statement which is contained in a pdf document was broadcast with a Special Release to all concerned.
The Special Release reads thus:
ARO and related Issues
Of the greatest Zikites! Ever intellectual Zikites!
Of recent, a number of issues surrounding Aro have come to the notice of the Executive Council.
The practice of Aro, especially among occupants of A block in the Hall (who are mostly freshmen) seems to have been going overboard.
Most people without a proper orientation of what Aro entails have confused it as a license to engage in sexual harassment and other disrespectful acts.
All these came to a head on July 10, 2021 when some A blockites reportedly followed some ladies and pointed flashlights at their body parts — a blatant act of sexual harassment.
The Executive Council, in an effort to protect the good image of the Hall then decided to publish a policy document that would regulate the practice of Aro and prevent excesses of sexual harassment. This led to the formulation of the policy document known as the AROISM POLICY which is being published under the Ministry of Socials.
We would love to note that these policy document has been completed over three weeks ago but a few bureaucratic issues led to the delay in its publication.
We therefore implore Zikites and non-Zikites alike to go through the policy document and digest its contents properly so as to understand properly the concept of Aro, the proper way of practising it, the new rules and remedies for victims of violation of such rules
All things being equal, Zik Hall is moving forward!
