At the late hours of Wednesday, 4th of August, 2021, A storey building located at the University of Ibadan Second Gate area was on Wednesday destroyed by fire.
According to The punch Newspaper, it was gathered that the fire started from one of the rooms upstairs and raged quickly. However, occupants of the nearby buildings were said to have called the firefighters, even as men of the Federal Fire Services, as well as their state counterparts, responded to the distress call.
The firemen joined efforts and eventually put out the fire which had already raged through the roof and destroyed parts of the building after several hours.
Although the roof of the building was destroyed as the effort of the firefighters prevented the destruction of the building. Some of the rooms were however affected by the inferno.
After the fire had been put out, some of the students living in the building were heard telling their neighbours that they did not have anywhere to sleep as the fire had destroyed their rooms.
Although, one of the firefighters upon being approached stated that the cause of the fire hadn’t been known, but the incident would be investigated. He said “We do not know what caused the fire, but the first thing which is to put the fire out has been done. After this, we will investigate what caused it.”
This would be one out of many other cases of emergency that had plague students of the University of Ibadan who had sought accommodation in areas around the school environment due to the online learning model employed by the university during her first semester of the 2020/ 2021 session owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
