The Literary and Debating Society of the University of Ibadan (TLDS) has announced the modalities for the 2021 edition of Jaw War, the biggest public speaking event in Sub-sahara Africa which is themed “AFRICA IN THE ERA OF THE NEW NORMAL”
In a press conference held at the Africa Regional Center For Information Science (ARCIS) on the 29th of July, 2021, which had in attendance representatives of various halls of residence, Senators, faculties and distinguished members of the press.
In his welcome address, the president of The Literary and Debating Society, Ayeni Otitojesu mentioned that the 2021 edition of the Jaw War will be the first of its kind in the 7th edition series after the resuscitation in 2014.
“Also, the 2021 Jaw War edition will incorporate other universities in what will be the first of its kind inter-varsity Jaw War,” he added.
The competition is expected to go national as it will include 8 schools from Oct 19- 21, 2021. The Literary and Debating Society University of Ibadan also launched its new logo and website amidst the press conference.
Furthermore, the draws for this year’s competition was conducted and departments were pitted against each other. In the preliminary rounds for participating faculties, Vet.medicine will face Clinical sciences, Economics vs Pharmacy, Law vs Agriculture, Public health vs Social sciences, Science vs Education, Renewable Resources vs Basic medical sciences and Faculty of Technology vs Dentistry.
However, The Faculty of Arts has gained automatic qualification into the quarter finals of the competition after seeding a lead from the 2019 edition.
While for the Halls of residence, ABH will go against Independence Hall as Mellanby halls will be trying out her speakers against winners of the 2019 edition of the competition, Lord Tedder Hall.
In the same vein, the great Nnamdi Azikwe will compete against Sultan Bello Hall and in the battle of the females, Queen Idia will face off Queen Elizabeth II, not forgetting Kuti vs Obafemi Awolowo Hall.
These fixtures are for the preliminary stages of the competition which is expected to run from 15th to 18th September, 2021 while the knockout stages will run from 22nd -30th of September and the finals is expected to hold on Friday, 8th of October, 2021.
The president also mentioned that there is a sum of 1 million Naira, amongst other exciting prices like laptops, smartphones up for grabs for outstanding speakers from different faculties and halls of residence.
This year’s event is expected to showcase the finest of public speakers from various faculties and halls of residence in the University of Ibadan as it has always been the tradition of the competition and also the emergence of new faces whose strength, boldness and intellectual ability will be tested as either they are deem fit to,” Stand up, Speak up or Shut up!
