The Nigerian Maritime Administration And Safety Agency (NIMASA), through Brenthurst and Samuelson, organized an essay competition to commemorate 2020 World Maritime Day with the theme: “Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet”.
The essay competition which was designed to create awareness of the tremendous opportunities in the maritime sector and engender the Nigerian youths to pursue careers in it.
Submissions were received from participants between Friday, Jan 29th and Thursday, Feb. 18th, 2021.
On Monday, June 21st, 2021, Brenthurst and Samuelson, on behalf of NIMASA announced Mr OKELUE, Amaechi Patrick , a 200L student of the department of Dentistry and Dental Surgery, University of Ibadan (UI) as the 1st prize winner and Mr OJO, ifedolapo, 200L student of the department of Civil Engineering, University of Ibadan, as 3rd prize winner.
The first prize winner, Patrick was given a cash prize of #500, 000 naira with a laptop and plaque while the 3rd prize winner received a cash prize of #250, 000 naira, a laptop and plaque.
However, five other UI students also stood out in the competition, and in turn were given consolation cash prizes of #100, 000 naira.
The world Maritime Day is celebrated by the international Maritime Organization (IMO) and member States globally to focus attention on the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, marine environment, seafarers , and other specific aspects of IMO’s work.
