#UI DECIDES 2020: Who is the next VC?

Since it’s creation in 1948, the University of Ibadan has been the yardstick for University education in Nigeria. The heights of success it has enjoyed over the years is largely due to the unbroken chain of solid and excellent management and leadership. Since the days of Prof. Kenneth Dike, the first Nigerian principal and Vice chancellor of the university, the Baton of succession has been passed down through to hands of great leaders and intellectuals.

The present (out-going) Vice chancellor, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka FAS, upon assumption of office on the 31st December, 2015 has relentlessly and successfully upheld the university’s values of discipline and excellence in character and learning. The University under the leadership of the highly esteemed geologist experienced a litany of achievements. Among such achievements is the recent ranking of Times Higher Education, placing UI among the best 500 institutions in the world; creation of more facilities and departments. In a document titled “MY STEWARDSHIP AS VICE-CHANCELLOR (2015- 2020)”, he highlights his lists of achievements from assumption of office until now.

As the tenure comes to an end, the hunt for the 13th VC of the institution is on. Certainly, whoever it is that emerges will have to put in a terrific performance for the next five years in order to outperform his predecessor’s achievements.

A Brief Description Of The Selection Process
The process for appointment of the next VC is guided by provisions provided in the University of Ibadan Act. It begins with the creation of an adhoc search team whose responsibility is to nominate qualified and possible candidates for the post of vice chancellor. The Act ensures that the university’s academic head is selected by the selection board. The selection board is a joint panel consisting of a select few Senate and Council members and chaired by the Pro- Chancellor.

The board is taxed with shortlisting the nomination list to three and on a scale of preference (with reasons) suggest a suitable replacement to the Nation’s President. The president will then officially appoint a candidate.

As part of the process to determine who sits in the ivory tower for the next five years, the UI community will be hosting the thirteen candidates aspiring for the VC chair. The candidates will present their manifesto in a bid to sell their plans for the school’s should they emerge and also to become favourites of the selecting panel.

The forum will be held on Thursday, 17th September, 2020 at 10:00 (WAT). You can join the forum via zoom with the following:
